Educational and research objectives
Department of English aims to deepen students' understanding of English-speaking society, culture, and thought, and to explore humanity through specialized and interdisciplinary research in six fields: British literature and culture, American literature and culture, global literature and culture, English linguistics, communication, and English language education. Based on the study of the English language and English-speaking culture, the Department also aims to develop unique and creative individuals who can contribute to society with an international perspective.
Diploma Policy (Policy for Graduation Certification and Degree Awarding)
■ Knowledge and skills
They have an objective understanding of the English language and communication in English, and have the linguistic knowledge and ability to communicate in English to achieve mutual understanding.
■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
1) Have a concrete understanding of English, English literature, and the culture and communication mechanisms of English-speaking countries, and have the mental ability to select and judge appropriate means for obtaining information, analyze and reconstruct that information, as well as the knowledge and operational ability to apply that understanding.
2) Have been exposed to numerous examples of literature and other works written in English and have the insight to understand people with different values based on the background knowledge and understanding.
3) Ability to understand different cultures, particularly English-speaking ones, and have the insight based on knowledge and understanding of different cultures, enabling mutual understanding that transcends cultures.
■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
Be interested in different cultures, societies, and values, and have the desire to utilize them in society.
Curriculum Policy (Policy for creating and implementing educational courses)
Department of English divides its courses into two categories: "English Language Courses" and "Specialized Courses." The curriculum is designed to allow students to acquire English language skills through the former, and specialized knowledge of English-speaking countries' languages, literature, culture, and communication, as well as English language pedagogy through the latter, while at the same time acquiring the ability to utilize their English language skills in society. In addition, in order to link and integrate "English Language Courses" and "Specialized Courses," specialized courses are appropriately placed from the first and second years.

"English subjects" aim to improve students' overall English proficiency through a variety of classes centered around Integrated English. "Specialized subjects" are available in six courses: "British Literature and Culture," "American Literature and Culture," "Global Literature and Culture," "English Linguistics," "Communication," and "English Language Teaching," allowing students to further deepen their specialized knowledge.
■ Knowledge and skills
A sufficient number of subjects will be provided to enable students to objectively understand the English language and English communication, and to develop the linguistic knowledge and operational skills necessary to mediate and understand each other through English (Integrated English, specialized subjects, etc.).
■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
The course is designed to provide students with a concrete understanding of English, English literature, and the culture and communication systems of English-speaking countries, and to foster sufficient knowledge and operational skills to apply that understanding (specialized courses such as seminars).
Students will be exposed to numerous examples of literature and literary works written in English, and will be provided with a range of courses (special lectures, etc.) to help them develop the insight required to understand people with different values and the background knowledge to do so.
We provide courses sufficient to enable students to understand different cultures, particularly those in English-speaking countries, and to foster insight based on knowledge and understanding of different cultures, as well as mutual understanding that transcends cultures (specialized courses such as special lectures and basic seminars).

We will provide sufficient subjects and opportunities to foster an interest in different cultures, societies, and values, and a desire to utilize them in society (all subjects).
Admission Policy
■ Knowledge and skills
Students will have an understanding of the content of Japanese language, foreign language, geography, history, civics, etc., studied at high school, and have knowledge equivalent to that of a high school graduate.
■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
Able to consider things from multiple perspectives and logically, and express and communicate one's thoughts in an easily understandable manner.
■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
Students have an interest, concern and curiosity in English-speaking languages, literature, culture and communication, as well as English language education, and a desire to contribute to society through coexistence with people from around the world who have different lifestyles, cultures, values and ways of thinking.
