The study trip is a unique and traditional event held annually by all third-year students since the founding of Department of History Aoyama Gakuin University in 1968. It is a distinctive course not found at other universities. The ideal since the founding of the Department of Department of History Aoyama Gakuin University has been to learn history in a balanced way through both "desk work," which involves reading and interpreting historical materials, and "fieldwork," which involves actually visiting the sites of historical events to conduct research. Learn to "interpret history"
The history you learn at university is very different from the Japanese and world history you have studied in junior high and high school. It is not a "memorization" thing where you just memorize dates and names, but rather you learn to "interpret history" by unraveling historical documents yourself, thinking about history independently, and searching for the truth.

While respecting the traditional frameworks of history, such as Japanese history, Eastern history, Western history, and archaeology, we approach past events from a broader perspective that goes beyond these, because history unfolds through the complex interactions between different cultures.

A rich and diverse faculty

Verifying historical sites through fieldwork
In order to learn history more broadly and deeply, fieldwork is essential, where students go to the actual site to confirm what they have learned by reading and interpreting historical documents. For this reason, Department of History organizes study trips for each seminar in the third year. Let's explore further why events that we thought we knew happened in the actual historical sites.
PICK UP LECTURES ?
Archaeology is a field of study that reconstructs human history from excavated objects. In the practical training, students learn the basics of the field through excavation surveys and sorting of artifacts. Since 2015, in cooperation with the Yokote City Board of Education in Akita Prefecture, we have been conducting surveys at the remains of Kanazawa Castle, which is believed to be the remains of the Gosannen War.
A group of volunteers has formed a research group on history. Activities include reading historical documents and research, visiting museums, etc. Currently, there are 10 research groups active, including archaeology, modern Japanese history, and medieval Western history. PICK UP SEMINARS ?
This course will study early modern Japanese history and social history at the end of the Edo period, particularly the deciphering and research of historical documents left behind in villages and towns during the Edo period. Students will learn basic knowledge of ancient documents and develop reading comprehension skills. Students will also be asked to find a topic based on their own interests and make a report on it.
The professor specializes in South Asian history, but the seminar covers South Asia, West Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, etc. Although it is a strict field in terms of the language used, my goal is to use historical materials (translations) from fields that interest me in my graduation thesis.
"Where is our world now, and where are we going?" Have you ever thought about such things? History is not just a field of study in which we memorize past events. History is a field that explores who we are here and now by considering the past, and it is sure to be useful when considering questions like these. Through reading and discussing literature in seminars and writing your own graduation theses, let's think together about where we are in the here and now.
I am conducting research on archaeological ruins and artifacts using natural science methods. Archaeological science can contribute to various issues in archaeology, such as age, place of origin, and paleoenvironment. Rather than simply analyzing ruins and artifacts and looking at numbers, I would like to improve and devise analytical methods that do not damage the ruins and artifacts, and think for myself about how the analytical results are linked to the historical background.
