  1. Interdisciplinary education

    The first distinctive feature of the School of School of International Politics, Economics and Communication is its interdisciplinary education. For example, even domestic political issues cannot be considered separately from international economics. Similarly, it is impossible to discuss issues of international finance and currency without knowledge of international politics. International communication is also closely linked to international politics and economics.     The department's basic subjects include Introduction to Political Theory, Introduction to International Relations, Introduction to Economics (Micro/Macro), Introduction to International Economics, General Introduction to International Communication, and Introduction to Language Sciences. Students are also free to take courses in other departments and courses beyond the boundaries of their department. Students can also choose seminars beyond their own department. This means that the system allows students to freely study the topics they really want to learn, without being restricted by departments or existing fields.

    The specialized education at the School of School of International Politics, Economics and Communication begins with the "Introductory Seminar" class, a required first-year specialized education subject. What areas of expertise does the academic field of the department you have enrolled in consist of? What kind of mindset is necessary to study the academic field of the department?     In the second year, there is a "pre-seminar". The pre-seminar is positioned as a link between the "introductory seminar" in the first year and the seminars that begin in the third year. In the pre-seminar, students acquire knowledge in specialized fields and develop the ability to conduct research, presentations, and debates based on that knowledge.
    The School of School of International Politics, Economics and Communication has seminars in the third and fourth years. The School of School of International Politics, Economics and Communication has an interdisciplinary education motto, so students are not limited to the seminars of their department, but can freely choose seminars that interest them from a wide variety of research themes. Here, each professor will conduct specialized research in small groups of around seven students per year, aiming to culminate their four years of research.

  3. Seminar Bridge

    In Aoyama Gakuin University, students can choose from specialized seminars taught by approximately 40 faculty members, regardless of their department. This program allows students to combine departments and seminars according to their individual interests and career paths. A prime example of this is the concept of interdisciplinary seminar bridging.

LANGUAGE EDUCATION ?

Comprehensive foreign language education: Four years of detailed lessons

In order to improve international communication skills, the School of School of International Politics, Economics and Communication offers foreign language education that aims to comprehensively develop students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through topics such as international and current affairs.

Foreign language education at the School of School of International Politics, Economics and Communication consists of English and other foreign languages (French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean) and is conducted over four years from enrollment to graduation. In order to have a broad international perspective beyond English-speaking countries, students choose one foreign language other than English and develop language skills while also learning about the culture. English education places emphasis on oral communication subjects, and most classes are conducted in English. All new students are tested upon enrollment, and classes are tailored to suit their abilities. English education is divided into English Communication courses, Reading, and Writing.

Global Studies Program (GSP) where specialized subjects are taught in English

As a pioneer in international education, Aoyama Gakuin University has returned to its roots and established the Global Studies Program, an English-based program, to enable many undergraduate students to fully utilize their abilities on the world stage.
This English-focused program caters to students' desire to study specialized subjects related to international politics and economics in English, and currently offers over 100 courses taught in English.
This program requires students to complete one-third to half of the required credits for graduation from Aoyama Gakuin University (40 to 66 or more credits out of 132) through specialized subjects taught in English. This should lead to an increase in international students and a more vibrant international exchange within the university.

GLOBAL PROGRAM

  1. University of Essex, UK Graduate School Dual Degree Program

    This is a program to study at the Graduate School of Essex University (UK) for one year from the second semester of the fourth year. Essex University is highly regarded in the world in the field of social sciences, and is an international university that accepts international students from over 130 countries. Exchange students can also earn a master's degree at the Graduate School of Essex University.

  2. Vietnam National University of Agriculture Training

    In partnership with the National Vietnam University of Agriculture, this is a one-week program where participants are paired with local students to carry out research and report on their findings. Through university lectures, lectures by local JETRO and JICA staff, visits to Japanese and local companies, and fieldwork in rural areas, participants will deepen their understanding of development economics and Japanese development assistance.

  3. Training at Lampung University, Indonesia

    This program was developed in collaboration with faculty members from the University of Aoyama Gakuin University in Indonesia. It's a program that explores Indonesian and Japanese politics, economics, culture, and communication, and has been conducted online since 2020. Participants virtually tour factories and learn a great deal from their peers through discussions.

  4. Overseas volunteer training

    An overseas volunteer program run by the nonprofit organization ICYE Japan. Participants participate in programs such as "environmental protection," "child welfare," and "teacher assistant" in about 30 countries across Europe, North and Central America, and Oceania. By combining the study of international communication-related subjects with practical volunteer work, participants can improve not only their knowledge and language skills, but also their international understanding and intercultural communication skills.

Aoyama Gakuin University offers a unique short-term overseas training program aimed at motivating students to learn, building their confidence, and developing communication skills and leadership abilities through practical experiences abroad.

Many international organizations require a master's degree as a condition for applying for employment, and graduate-level research is essential for acquiring the policy proposal and negotiation skills necessary to solve global problems. Some graduates of Aoyama Gakuin University have gone on to graduate school and are active in international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank, as well as NGOs.
In Graduate School of International Politics, Economics and Communication, you can choose one of three specializations—International Politics, International College of Economics, or International Communication—to suit your interests and career plans. You can deepen your studies in your specialization while also taking courses from other specializations.

School of International Politics, Economics and Communication offers a special graduate-level course enrollment program that allows fourth-year students to take graduate-level courses in advance.
Fourth-year students with excellent academic records who have earned more than 90% of the credits required for graduation by the end of their third year and have reached a certain GPA level may, under certain conditions, take up to 16 credits of graduate-level courses as special enrollment. These credits can be included in the graduation requirements after entering graduate school. Therefore, it is possible to obtain a master's degree in just one year of graduate school.

To obtain a Master's degree, students must be enrolled in this program for two years, completing at least four semesters, acquiring the required credits, passing the examination of their master's thesis or research project results, the final examination, and proficiency in one foreign language.

?Doctoral course?
This program aims to cultivate the advanced skills and broad academic knowledge necessary for independent research activities as a researcher. Upon completing three or more years of study in this program, receiving the required research guidance, and passing the doctoral dissertation defense, final examination, and proficiency test in one foreign language, students can obtain a doctoral degree.

Furthermore, many students go on to graduate school at other universities both domestically and internationally. It is certainly possible to go on to further studies or study abroad at other universities after completing Aoyama Gakuin University graduate program, and students pursue studies in a variety of fields, not only in politics and economics, but also in philosophy, history, and more.
