operation
Our institute is operated through competitive funding from public research funding agencies, including the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, as well as external funding acquired through collaborative research and commissioned research with companies.
Employees
Director: Junichi Shimoyama
Deputy Director Naoko Kakai
Research activities and structure
Our institute is comprised of "externally funded projects" funded by external funding from companies and public institutions.
Each project may set up its own research institute, headed by a project leader, and each project institute will receive budgetary support from the university.
We are also working to establish a visiting appointment system that will enable researchers from other research institutions and companies to smoothly participate in projects.
List of RESEARCH laboratories
Energy Harvesting Laboratory
This project will be the first in the world to present the basic concepts and design guidelines for materials and elements that can effectively convert energy in the surrounding environment, including the vast amounts of thermal energy that is largely wasted, into electrical energy.
Aoyama Institute of Learning Sciences
We will promote learning science research to build a learning environment that draws out, enhances, and refines each individual's "ability to learn." We will develop, verify, and implement in society a learning environment that supports constructive use of AI technology and one-person devices, learning and learning methods through dialogue with diverse others, and learning evaluation.
Functional Organic Radical Research Institute
Based on organic radicals that are stable even in air, our aim is to create innovative organic radicals with functions difficult to achieve with conventional molecular systems by generating new electronic states, elucidating their unique properties, and controlling their electronic states and properties through external stimuli.
Educational Testing Institute
Aiming to improve the quality of education, we will investigate the state of ICT teaching materials and educational evaluation. We will develop ICT teaching materials that incorporate cutting-edge technology and evaluate their effectiveness. We will clarify how to apply the knowledge gained to the classroom.
Collaborative Mechanism Design Institute
Sustainable value creation through collaboration requires mechanisms that elicit cooperative and effective contributions from diverse stakeholders. This research institute aims to develop theories and implement socially relevant mechanisms for this purpose, focusing on the Japanese agricultural system.
Institute of Financial Technology (President Initiative Project)
Departing from conventional financial technology development, we will conduct research and development of new financial technology that combines the humanities and sciences from the perspective of consumers, taking into account major changes in social structure such as a declining birthrate and aging population, and a maturing economy.
International Development Research Center
The institute will form a research base focused on the theme of "sustainable community development for poverty reduction in Asia and Africa" and will carry out empirical research in the field of international development (mainly education, health care, infrastructure development, and rural development).
Center for Development of Mixed Methods Research Education
This research project aims to build a mixed methods education platform for nursing researchers. By adding ICT and interactive generative AI to the e-learning developed in the previous research project, we aim to provide an interactive learning environment that fosters research application skills and flexibility.
Computer Graphics Research Institute
We aim to achieve the ultimate in realism by developing physics-based simulation techniques for a wide variety of objects, including soft deformable objects (viscoelastic-plastic bodies) and powders.
Computer Human Interaction Laboratory
By implementing devices that use computers to stimulate the human sensory organs and generate a variety of sensations, we will develop technology that will support human behavior and lifestyles, improve QoL, and realize a world of well-being.
Gerontology Institute
Gerontology, an interdisciplinary field of study aiming to solve the various challenges of a super-aging society, is becoming increasingly necessary in all areas of modern society. Since its establishment in 2018, this institute has been conducting a wide range of activities based on four pillars—research, education, public relations, and awareness-raising—with the aim of realizing a "super-aging society where everyone can truly rejoice in longevity," demonstrating Aoyama Gakuin University 's international leadership in the field of gerontology.
Small Area Population Projection Research Center
Based on available local population statistics, we will calculate estimated populations for approximately 30 to 40 years into the future for multiple countries or regions in the Asia-Pacific region, and publish the results as a web mapping system.
Soft Matter Research Institute
This research institute conducts theoretical studies on anomalous transport phenomena and diverse phase separation phenomena observed in soft matter systems. Through these fundamental physical studies, we aim to address fundamental issues related to life phenomena such as DNA dynamics and intracellular structure formation.
Solar Pump Irrigation Agriculture Research Institute
In recent years, in regions such as India and Bangladesh where groundwater irrigation is prevalent, there has been a strong movement to switch from fossil fuels to solar power for pumping groundwater. This institute will expand its target areas to the whole world and conduct research on the economic efficiency of solar pumps, income distribution, and their significance in addressing the problem of groundwater depletion.
Microspacecraft Research Institute
Aoyama Gakuin University, an interdisciplinary university that combines arts and sciences, will develop and operate its own micro-satellites, pioneering the frontiers of space.
Nanocarbon Device Engineering Institute
At this institute, we will conduct research into material synthesis technology, property control technology, device fabrication technology, and other areas with the aim of realizing new devices (antennas, sensors, etc.) that make maximum use of the excellent physical properties of nanocarbon materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes.
Institute of Contemporary Japanese History
The Institute for Japanese Contemporary History is engaged in the historical study of the postwar system. Through the investigation and analysis of various historical materials, it aims to clarify how the postwar system was formed and how it transformed.
Microbial Chemistry Laboratory
Natural products are important compounds that not only contribute to basic science but also serve as the seeds for pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals. Our institute focuses on microorganisms that produce useful natural products, particularly actinomycetes, and aims to establish techniques to awaken their substance production capabilities and analytical methods for genome DNA information, to efficiently obtain new natural products, and to create non-natural compounds.
HR Transformation Institute
HR transformation is gaining attention as a key element of CX. This institute will pursue the direction of HR transformation in a multifaceted manner, from the perspective of HR policy aspects such as the promotion of job-based and market-based HR, and HR function aspects such as HR business partners and CoEs (Centers of Excellence).
Photochromic Materials Research Institute
By utilizing the structural interference and exciton interactions that arise from the inter-unit interactions of biphotochromic molecules consisting of inverse photochromic units that respond to visible light and near-infrared light, we aim to develop innovative cooperative photoresponsive functions that cannot be achieved with single photochromic molecules.
Health Innovation Center
Through interdisciplinary collaboration that combines basic research related to health, medicine, and welfare with biomedical engineering, nanotechnology, and IT, we are taking on the challenge of socially implemented research (health innovation) that contributes to physical and mental health, and exploring ways for humans to live a humane life.
Institute of Organic Element Functional Science
With organic element chemistry as its core academic field, this research group will comprehensively promote the design, synthesis, structural analysis, property evaluation, and application development of functional organic molecules, utilizing main group elements and transition metal elements. Through this, the aim is to create next-generation photo-functional materials, including near-infrared luminescent materials, and to build a new academic foundation.
