Foreigners who are engaged in various activities in Japan are also obligated to abide by Japanese law. In particular, the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act is a law that is of great concern to international students. The International Center will provide appropriate advice and instructions to international students so that they can complete all the necessary procedures for staying in Japan as required by law. Applications to the Regional Immigration Bureau must be made at the individual's own risk.

A residence card will be issued to mid- to long-term residents who reside in Japan for six months or more.
A residence card is issued along with permission for residence, such as permission to land, permission to change residence status, or permission to renew period of stay.
It is required by law that you carry your residence card with you at all times, so please be careful not to forget it.

If you have been accepted to Aoyama Gakuin University (full-time international students)

The application for permission to extend period of stay is a procedure that allows foreign nationals residing in Japan with a status of residence to extend their period of stay and continue their stay if the Regional Immigration Bureau determines that it is appropriate to continue their stay in order to achieve their intended purpose. Foreign nationals who wish to extend their period of stay must apply for permission to extend their period of stay before the permitted period of stay expires. Please note that in the case of international students, renewal may not be approved due to poor grades, etc., so please make sure to focus on your studies on a daily basis.

If you wish to renew your visa (prospective students)

For those who already hold a "Student" residence status, the application procedure for extending your period of stay varies depending on your current residence status.
●If your residence permit expires by the end of January before enrollment: Please apply for renewal of your residence permit with your current affiliated institution as the receiving educational institution.
●If your residence permit expires between February before enrollment and the end of May of the enrollment year: Please apply for renewal permission with Aoyama Gakuin University as your receiving educational institution before enrollment.
●If your residence permit expires after June of the year of enrollment: Please check the instructions provided after enrollment.

*When applying for renewal of your residence status as a receiving educational institution Aoyama Gakuin University, you will need to submit documents prepared by Aoyama Gakuin University. Therefore, if you wish to renew your "Student" residence status, please contact the International Center first.
Please note that information regarding the renewal application process for prospective students will be provided after the enrollment procedures are completed.

If you wish to renew your license (current students)

Aoyama Campus students:
Three months before the expiration date of your visa, we will hold an orientation on application procedures to guide you through the procedure and distribute the necessary documents. Please check the schedule from the message on the student portal and fill out the orientation participation application form in advance to participate. We cannot provide individual guidance outside of the scheduled schedule.
However, if your residence permit expires in April or May, you must pay attention to the application period. For details, please check the information on the Student Portal.

Students affiliated with Sagamihara Campus:
We will respond to your request on an individual basis, so please report to the Sagamihara Campus International Center approximately three months before the expiration date of your period of stay.

Notification of the results of renewal application

Once you have received the results of your application for extension of period of stay, please notify the International Center immediately.
According to national policy, universities are required to properly manage the enrollment of international students. Even if you have properly renewed your period of stay, the university will not be able to grasp the facts without a report, so we ask for your cooperation in reporting.
Please note that reporting procedures vary depending on your campus.

A change of residence status refers to the process by which a foreign national holding a residence status obtains permission to change their residence status to a new one when they wish to change their purpose of stay and engage in activities that fall under a different residence status.
Most scholarships for international students, both within and outside the university, require that the applicant have a "student" visa status.
Foreign students at Aoyama Gakuin University who hold a residence status other than "student" that allows for medium- to long-term stays in Japan and who wish to change their status to "student" must apply for permission to change their residence status at the regional immigration bureau that has jurisdiction over their place of residence.
If you currently hold a residence status other than "Student" and wish to apply for a change to "Student," the International Center will provide information on the necessary documents and other requirements.

If you wish to make changes

If you wish to change your residence status to "Student", please first contact the International Center at your campus.
Please note that new students will be informed of the procedure for applying for changes after completing their enrollment procedures.

Reporting the results of change permission applications

Once the result of your application for permission to change has been received, please notify the International Center immediately.
According to national policy, universities are required to properly manage the enrollment of international students. Even if you have properly changed your residence status, the university will not be able to grasp the facts without a report, so we ask for your cooperation in reporting.

If an applicant does not have a valid residence status in Japan, or if a current student loses their Japanese residence status due to a leave of absence or other reasons and wishes to return to school, the applicant or their representative residing in Japan must apply for a "Certificate of Eligibility" at a regional immigration bureau. After obtaining the certificate, the applicant must then apply for a "Student" visa at the Japanese embassy or consulate in their home country. The process takes 2 to 3 months from application to issuance, so please apply as early as possible. The "Certificate of Eligibility" is valid for 3 months from the date of issuance.
If you wish to apply on your behalf or through an agent (such as a relative or financial sponsor), you will need to submit the required documents prepared by the university. Therefore, the student themselves should contact the International Center at their campus as soon as possible.
Please note that if you currently reside overseas and wish to have the university apply on your behalf, Aoyama Gakuin University will submit the application to the local immigration bureau (this does not apply to undergraduate freshmen who have passed entrance examinations other than the "International Student Entrance Examination").
However, since the Ministry of Justice reviews the "Certificate of Eligibility for Residence Status," the university cannot be held responsible if the application is denied.

[Returning Students]
Applicants wishing to return to school for the second semester: Deadline June 10th
Applicants wishing to return to school for the first semester: Deadline is December 10th (Applications can be submitted from November, so early submission is recommended).
*Regardless of the date, please contact the International Center as soon as your return date is decided and prepare according to the instructions provided. Delays in contacting us may delay visa issuance and you may not be able to start classes in time for the new semester.

The Immigration Services Agency of Japan accepts various applications and handles inquiries regarding residence procedures.

Local government consultation desks and the Immigration Bureau have cooperated to set up one-stop consultation centers to provide guidance on the necessary procedures for foreigners to live in Japan and to provide advice on daily life. Consultations are also available in foreign languages.

The center brings together government offices that support the residence of foreigners who live and work in Japan, and handles activities such as responding to inquiries from foreigners, supporting companies that want to employ foreigners, and supporting local government organizations that work to support foreigners. There are eight consultation offices within the center, and the Tokyo Immigration Bureau provides residence consultation, and the Tokyo Employment Service Center for Foreigners provides job hunting support.

Applications for various purposes, such as renewal of period of stay and permission to engage in activities other than those permitted under the status of residence, are to be made at the regional immigration office that has jurisdiction over your place of residence. In principle, the office is open from 9:00 to 16:00 (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays).
