The qualifications required for applying to partner and accredited universities are academic performance (GPA) and scores from language proficiency tests such as TOEFL iBT and IELTS. However, depending on the host university, a language proficiency certificate issued by a language instructor at Aoyama Gakuin University may be accepted instead of a language proficiency test. You must meet the application requirements by the time of application, so thorough preparation is necessary.

The language proficiency required for application is the minimum level necessary for studying abroad. While the required language proficiency varies depending on the study abroad destination, you will be using the local language in your daily life and taking specialized courses, so academic language skills are essential, not just conversational ones. Sufficient language skills will facilitate smooth communication with others, making your study abroad experience more fulfilling and fruitful. Furthermore, it can sometimes be a necessary means of self-protection, so thorough preparation to improve your language skills before departure is necessary. Please note that TOEFL iBT and IELTS scores submitted with Aoyama Gakuin University study abroad application must be from tests taken within one year prior to your application.

TOEFL iBT

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an international standard English proficiency test administered to people whose native language is not English, and is a required test for students who wish to study abroad at universities in English-speaking countries. TOEFL iBT is taken on a computer, with each person assigned a computer at the test center. For details and the latest information, please check the CIEE Japan Representative Office website.

IELTS

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an English proficiency test that universities, higher education institutions, and continuing education institutions in English-speaking countries require applicants to submit their scores. Unlike TOEFL iBT, which is administered entirely on computer, IELTS allows you to choose between paper-based or computer-based formats. However, the speaking test is always conducted in an interview format with an interviewer. Also, please note that some of our partner institutions in Aoyama Gakuin University may require the IELTS for UKVI test.

Languages other than English

If you wish to study abroad in a country other than an English-speaking country, some partner institutions may require you to achieve a certain score on the language proficiency test of that country in addition to a language proficiency certificate. Please check the application requirements for details.

English-speaking countries like the United States and the United Kingdom aren't the only options for studying abroad. GPA refers to the average grade per credit of a student's registered courses, and is calculated using the following method using Grade Points given according to the grade evaluation stage. The GPA used at the time of application will be the value calculated at the end of the academic year for applicants departing in the early semester, and at the end of the first semester of the year (including the evaluation of courses completed in the early semester) for applicants departing in the late semester. *For School of Social Informatics, teacher training course subjects are not included in the GPA calculation.
