Message from the Dean

Graduate School of Literature Aoyama Gakuin University Graduate School consists of the following majors: English and American Literature, French Literature and Linguistics, Japanese Literature and Language, History, and Comparative Arts.

In Graduate School of Literature, you will acquire advanced and broad specialized knowledge, building upon your undergraduate studies. Each major differs significantly in its traditions, characteristics, and research methods, depending on its academic field. As you progress in your research, you will encounter and acquire both traditional research methods unique to each academic field and cutting-edge research methods, such as those represented by digital humanities.

The humanities are said to be a field that seeks to explore questions such as "the meaning of human existence" and "what it means to be human." While each specialization within Graduate School of Literature has a strong sense of individuality in its academic field, it is expected that their respective research will advance humanities studies.

To advance research, it is necessary to read through a vast amount of prior research, examine various materials located in different places, conduct diverse experiments and observations, and deepen the research by publishing research reports. Furthermore, it is important to first define where one's own research interests lie, and to constantly consider the significance of that problem. In addition, interdisciplinary research through collaboration with academic fields outside one's specialization may lead to new results.

In graduate school, even beginners are recognized as researchers. Faculty members, as independent researchers themselves, engage with students and sincerely advise them to improve their research. You will also be able to make friends who research the same field, both within our university and at other universities. These friends who share the same research goals may become lifelong companions, sharing both the joys and hardships of research. We hope that you will be able to make such friends through graduate school courses at Aoyama Gakuin University university, as well as through graduate school courses at partner universities, and through various research groups and academic conferences.

Modern society is undergoing significant change and fluidity due to globalization and the advancement of information technology. In this context, the question of "what it means to be human" is becoming increasingly important. This is because, through this questioning, we can cultivate firm wisdom and insight that allows us to cooperate and collaborate with others without being swayed by our surroundings.

I hope that each and every one of you will create original and compelling papers through your studies and research in graduate school, acquire cutting-edge knowledge, and be able to fully contribute to research, education, and various fields of society.
