Types of study abroad
Aoyama Gakuin University 's study abroad system can be broadly divided into long-term programs (study abroad at partner universities, study abroad at accredited universities) and short-term programs (overseas language and cultural training, overseas internships). Furthermore, it is possible to take a leave of absence to study abroad, allowing students to choose a program that suits their individual goals, destination, duration, and level.
The 2026 "Study Abroad and International Exchange Orientation" will introduce Aoyama Gakuin University 's study abroad programs and international exchange opportunities on campus.
Long-term programs (Affiliated schools, accredited schools, and study abroad during leave of absence)
For exchange programs with partner universities and accredited universities, the period of study abroad is counted towards the period of enrollment at Aoyama Gakuin University. Therefore, credits earned by taking specialized subjects or foreign language courses at the host university can be recognized as credits towards graduation requirements at Aoyama Gakuin University. As a result, if the graduation requirements are met, it may be possible to graduate in four years, depending on the year of study abroad. Candidates for exchange programs are selected through document review and interviews, and after approval by the university.
The Partner University Study Abroad Program is an "exchange program" in which students are sent to universities that have concluded student exchange agreements with Aoyama Gakuin University. The Accredited University Study Abroad Program is a system in which, if a student's study abroad objectives cannot be achieved through the Partner University Study Abroad Program, they can select and apply to a university or higher education institution that offers a degree program that matches their learning objectives, obtain admission, and then apply to Aoyama Gakuin University for accredited university study abroad. If approved, they can study abroad in a manner similar to the Partner University Study Abroad Program. In the case of accredited university study abroad, tuition fees must be paid to both Aoyama Gakuin University and the accredited university.
Short-term Programs
This is a program that allows you to take part in short-term overseas language and cultural training or internships and other work experiences during the summer and spring holidays. The International Center implements a variety of programs in various countries with the aim of improving language skills and international exchange. For information about short-term programs organized by faculties, please contact the office of each faculty.
Study Abroad During Leave of Absence
This involves taking a leave of absence for a semester or a year to study abroad independently. Therefore, you must handle the procedures related to studying abroad yourself. The leave of absence procedure must be completed in advance at Academic Affairs Division (Aoyama) / Academic Affairs Division (Sagamihara). Credits for courses taken at the study abroad institution will not be recognized as credits at Aoyama Gakuin University, and the period of study abroad will not be counted towards your enrollment period at Aoyama Gakuin University, so you will not be able to graduate in four years. The leave of absence period is limited to two consecutive years, but in particularly unavoidable circumstances, it may be permitted for up to three consecutive years after review. If you are considering taking a leave of absence to study abroad, be sure to consult with Academic Affairs Division (Aoyama) / Academic Affairs Division (Sagamihara) in advance.
