Faculty Characteristics and Career Paths (Faculty of College of Science and Engineering)

FEATURES ?

It is boundless dreams and passion that open up new possibilities. We provide an inspiring learning environment with a view to the world and the future.

The Faculty of College of Science and Engineering has produced numerous research results that have had a significant impact on society, including the discovery of new high-temperature superconductors. Building on these high-level research achievements that have attracted attention from around the world, we aim to further revitalize interdisciplinary research. With our unique structure of seven departments, we have realized a future-oriented curriculum and educational and research system that covers not only basic sciences such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry, but also interdisciplinary fields.
The research areas of Aoyama Gakuin University are directly linked to cutting-edge challenges in a wide range of fields, including nanotechnology, materials creation, and genetic engineering, and our laboratories are constantly conducting exciting research that explores new possibilities. Furthermore, because we study diverse interdisciplinary fields, students can acquire the research qualities essential for advanced technology development, such as flexible thinking that is not bound by established academic disciplines.
Currently, we are challenging ourselves with applied-oriented research based on a solid theoretical and fundamental foundation. You can explore the various courses within each department and the Graduate Graduate School of Science and Engineering, but these can also be seen through the following 10 themes, for example.
It is hoped that research in these fields will foster the beginnings of new academic disciplines and technologies for the future.

  • 01. Material
  • 02. Nanomolecular Systems
  • 03. Environment and energy conservation
  • 04. Life Sciences
  • 05. Design and Safety
  • 06. Management
  • 07. Aerospace
  • 08. Communications and Information Systems
  • 09. Medical
  • 10. Theory and Fundamentals

"Advanced Practical Program in Science and Engineering" for in-depth learning from an early stage*

Students can participate in laboratory classes that usually begin in the fourth year in their second or third year, providing an opportunity for advanced learning from an early stage.

Characteristics of the education system, introductory education

The Faculty of College of Science and Engineering is committed to enriching its educational system, which effectively brings out the foundation of the faculty as a whole and the unique characteristics of each department. This is supported by an open atmosphere and educational system, and a welcoming educational and research environment where faculty members, supporting staff, and all students from first-year undergraduates to graduate students can speak on equal footing. Aoyama Gakuin University and Engineering is constantly working to create a better curriculum, aiming to be a place of learning where everyone can have bright eyes, fresh ideas, and many students can be inspired.
Mathematics, which forms the foundation of all specialized fields, is remedialed immediately before enrollment. Furthermore, to help students develop a broad perspective in science and engineering through practical experience, all students participate in experiments and practical training in the fundamental fields of science, engineering, and information processing during their first year. A distinctive feature is the emphasis on hands-on education in these fundamental fields.

Practical and unique English education

The Faculty of College of Science and Engineering has reformed its English education curriculum with the aim of International Communication for Scientists and Engineers. If students can read English papers, present their research in English, and hold discussions in English, their learning and research fields will be broadened and they will be able to reach a higher level. To achieve this, the compulsory subject "English Core" combines two of each of the skills of "listening," "speaking," "reading," and "writing," allowing students to step up from general English ability "English for General Purpose" in the first year to academic English "English for Academic Purpose" in the second year, and English for Specific Purpose in science and engineering in the second year. Classes are held in active learning CALL classrooms (Computer Assisted Language Learning) with approximately 30 students, and communication skills are thoroughly improved through student-centered class activities. Outside of class, students can study English anytime and anywhere with e-learning. In addition, students can now participate in short-term overseas language training from their first year. The English education curriculum of the Faculty of College of Science and Engineering provides English education for engineers and scientists who can be active globally.
In addition, with the goal of "learning, researching, and presenting results in English," we offer a practical curriculum and an "International Science and Engineering Program" that provides comprehensive support for studying abroad.

Information Education

Computers are indispensable tools for learning and research activities. Aoyama Gakuin University offers a curriculum that allows students to gradually acquire not only basic computer skills but also programming skills necessary for research and experiments, from the fundamentals to practical applications, without undue pressure.

Affiliated institutions that support and expand learning

The university has established three affiliated research centers to strengthen and streamline research activities, as well as a liaison center to promote joint research and commissioned research with local communities and companies.

SYSTEM: A system to support research activities at graduate schools

  1. Young Researchers Development Scholarship Program

Tuition fees for the standard enrollment period (3 years) will be fully waived.
This is Aoyama Gakuin University Aoyama Gakuin University unique grant scholarship program, designed to support the learning of outstanding young talent. Its purpose is to revitalize our graduate school and cultivate young researchers who possess advanced expertise and research capabilities and who can contribute to society.
Applicants must be under 30 years old at the time of enrollment and have passed the scholarship selection process (conducted during the entrance examination).

  2. Graduate Student Assistant Program

Upon assuming the position of assistant, the expected monthly salary is 160,000 yen.
As a research assistant, you can gain research and teaching experience by assisting with classes, and with financial support, you can dedicate yourself to your own research activities.
Further detailed regulations are provided in Aoyama Gakuin University employment rules.
Those who have completed the enrollment procedures for the doctoral program in this graduate school and have also passed a separate selection process for appointment as a graduate student research assistant.

  3. International Conference Support System

Support amount: Domestic conference participation: 70,000 yen, International conference participation: 150,000 yen
To support global education and foster young researchers, we provide partial or full support for presentation expenses (including travel expenses) for graduate students presenting their research at international conferences held in Japan or overseas.
After enrolling as a doctoral student, students apply within a set period, and around 20 applications are selected within Graduate School of Science and Engineering. (The number of applications selected varies depending on the year.)
