Shuhei IKEHATA
Professor: Media Studies / International Relations (particularly East Asia and international organizations)
A word of advice to exam candidates: Even if two high school friends are sitting next to each other looking at their smartphones, they are viewing completely different content... It's not uncommon. This is because information via social media is "optimized" to suit the preferences of the user. However, this "optimization" is for the sake of advertising and increasing page views, and the content is full of misinformation. Together with my students, I delve into the modern information space and explore how the media is trying to convey the facts.

A message to prospective students: I mainly teach classes related to culture. Encounters with different cultures are full of surprises, joy, anxiety, and confusion. A message to the students taking the exam: My specialty is media studies. The Internet is currently changing not only the world of media, but also the state and the world. Even if we focus on individuals, life is ultimately about experience = information, so there is no doubt that media and information will become even more important in the future society where more and more people have enough food, clothing, and shelter. For example, how do English advertising messages and movie titles change depending on the culture and country?
