CURRICULUM Learning Features and Curriculum
Department of English is a traditional department that embodies the "Aoyama of English." Ability-based, small-group classes allow students to thoroughly hone their four English skills from their first and second years. At the same time, students learn about English-speaking literature, history, thought, and language, acquiring a wide range of knowledge beyond language, and offering numerous courses that deepen their understanding of the true essence of humanity and culture. The department has produced many students who have earned teaching licenses.
ENGLISH PROGRAMS
Two programs for "Learning in English" and "Mastering English"
The selective English-language educational program "PESE" (Program for Extensive Studies in English) has further expanded the number of classes offered in English. Not only language subjects, but also literature, culture, linguistics, education, and many other specialized subjects are taught in English. At the same time, we also offer the "Interpreting and Translation Program," a program designed to further develop specialized and practical skills.
IE Seminars
In these thematic English courses, which are conducted entirely in English, students can choose a topic of their choice. The topics vary from instructor to instructor, and can range from literature, art, music, food culture, science and technology, internet skills, human relationships, and more. In seminar format, students will also develop their individual research and presentation skills in English.

Department of English, with a faculty that includes many international instructors, prides itself on its high standards and well-rounded curriculum. It offers a variety of courses designed to improve practical English proficiency and takes pride in being a leading department in “Aoyama.”
Department of English To ensure that each student can hone their English skills and apply them to excel in a wide range of fields, the department uses its uniquely developed Integrated English (IE) Program to solidify students’ English proficiency during their first and second years, and builds upon this foundation to offer a diverse range of specialized education.
The curriculum consists of six courses: British Literature and Culture, American Literature and Culture, Global Literature and Culture, English Linguistics, Communication, and English Language Education.While acquiring a multifaceted and comprehensive approach to English, students can, starting in their third year, proactively choose a single specialized track to pursue individualized studies that further develop their interests and strengths.
Furthermore, the Department of Aoyama Gakuin University aims to cultivate English proficiency that students can apply in an increasingly globalized society, providing a multifaceted and specialized English education. As part of this effort, the department offers numerous opportunities for exchange programs with overseas universities (with a credit transfer system) and conducts its own short-term study abroad program in the United Kingdom. Many students participate in these programs every year.
Furthermore, in our time-honored tradition of training English teachers, we have produced numerous graduates who have obtained teaching licenses.
