Message from the Director

Greetings from the Director of the Center for Gender Studies Professor Shin Hye-bong Faculty of Law

Aoyama Gakuin University are pleased to announce the establishment of the "Aoyama Gakuin University Schoonmaker Memorial Gender Studies Center." Schoonmaker was a missionary who founded a girls' elementary school during the Meiji era, one of the origins of Aoyama. The center aims to carry on the research conducted at Aoyama Gakuin Women's Junior College, pass on the tradition of women's education at Aoyama to a new era, and contribute to gender equality and respect for gender diversity Aoyama and in society through the development of gender studies and education.

Anti-discrimination is a fundamental principle of international human rights standards, as evidenced by the Olympic Charter and Code of Ethics, which clearly state the respect for human rights treaties and the rejection of all forms of discrimination. However, gender discrimination remains deeply rooted in society, and Japan, in particular, lags far behind in terms of the proportion of women in politics, the proportion of women in executive positions, and the gender wage gap. With women making up half the population, it is impossible to create a society that meets the needs of the people if decisions are made almost exclusively by men. In order to create a society where people can thrive and demonstrate their abilities regardless of gender, it is essential to pay attention to gender issues, that is, issues of sex in a social and cultural context. Furthermore, people's sexual orientations and gender identities are diverse, and this diversity must also be valued.

The gender perspective is relevant to many academic fields, including literature, law, political science, and economics, and we believe that Aoyama Gakuin University 's establishment of this center is of great significance. We would appreciate your support so that this center can carry out beneficial activities.
