We will introduce our business activities for "Next-generation Well-being - Building integrated human measurement and modeling technology aimed at individual adaptation."
Business Purpose
In mature societies like those in developed countries, a social framework that enables all people to live in good physical, mental, and social condition is crucial. At Aoyama Gakuin University, we define this social framework as "Next Generation Well-Being" and aim to establish it as a brand for research related to it.
To realize "next-generation well-being," when providing services based on the various knowledge and skills cultivated so far, it is necessary to have a system that provides optimal and satisfying services to each individual service recipient, rather than a conventional system that provides uniform services. To realize such a service delivery system, measurement technology to measure the characteristics of the target person and an individually adapted model that can accommodate those characteristics are important, and it is necessary to feed back information about the characteristics of the target person to the service provider using these. In this project, the aim is to establish "next-generation well-being" as a research brand of our university by developing and socially implementing a Aoyama Gakuin University delivery system that has this measurement technology and individually adapted model as an "integrated human measurement and modeling technology" that fuses bio-measurement technology, motion measurement technology, modeling technology, and individualized adaptation technology.
Figure 1 shows a comparison between a conventional service delivery system and the service delivery system proposed in this project for "next-generation well-being."
Figure 1 Comparison between conventional service provision systems and the proposed "next-generation well-being service provision system"
Conventional service providing systems provide uniform services based on a common generic model for an unspecified number of service recipients. This generic model is constructed as knowledge based on experience and subjectivity by observers who actively collect the characteristics of the recipients over a long period of time. Therefore, in conventional service providing systems, it is difficult to quickly provide services that reflect the characteristics of each individual recipient, and optimal and satisfying services are not necessarily provided to all recipients. In contrast, the proposed system introduces an individual adaptation model instead of the conventional generic model. The individual adaptation model consists of a common model used in a generalized manner and individual adaptation parameters that represent the characteristics of each recipient. The characteristics of each recipient are measured as biometric information and movement, and the individual adaptation parameters are automatically adjusted by analyzing the measurement data. This provides feedback of information reflecting the characteristics of the recipient to the service provider. The service provider can provide optimal services that are individually adapted to each recipient based on this information. This system is realized by fusing the elemental technologies developed as biometric measurement technology, movement measurement technology, modeling technology, and individual adaptation technology into an "integrated human measurement and modeling technology." This combination of technologies makes it possible to automatically measure individual characteristics, such as biometric information and movements, in a short period of time, and compared to traditional feedback from observers, it is possible to quickly and accurately reflect the characteristics of more subjects in services and provide them.
The proposed system is not targeted at a specific field, but can be applied in a variety of fields. This project will particularly target the fields of health and welfare, knowledge education, and skills training, and will be deployed domestically through social implementation in collaboration with local governments, companies, and domestic universities that have a track record of joint implementation in industry-government-academia projects. Furthermore, by conducting demonstration experiments in collaboration with research teams from universities overseas, model cases will be created for overseas deployment.
Specifically, we aim to expand domestically and internationally in the fields of health and welfare, knowledge education, and skills training through the examples shown in Figures 2 to 4.
Health and Welfare
In the field of health and welfare, the aim is to build an individualized model based on biometric and movement measurements to extend healthy lifespan and provide information on effective health management. As shown in Figure 2, the health status of each subject is estimated from biometric and movement measurement data and collected via a network in a database installed in a company or other location. Based on the estimated health status, individualized parameters are automatically adjusted, and health management information tailored to the individual (aromatherapy, diet menus, exercise menus, healthy recipes, etc.) is provided to the subject through a health management assistant. Key technologies include unrestrained measurement of biometric and movement using ultra-sensitive pressure sensors, machine learning for building a model that integrates biometric and movement, and the accuracy of health status estimation will be improved by combining this with a newly introduced hyperspectral camera. Collaborating companies include WIN Frontier, which has a proven track record in the field of wearable information technology in healthcare.

Knowledge Education Field
In the field of knowledge education, the aim is to build an individualized model by measuring the learner's biometric information and movements, and provide the most suitable teaching materials at an effective timing in order to improve the effectiveness of the education for the learner. Key technologies include unrestrained biobehavioral measurement using a webcam, and by combining this with a newly introduced high-performance wearable electroencephalograph, it will be possible to evaluate the characteristics of each learner from the perspective of brain activity. In this field, active learning, in which the learner takes the initiative, is progressing. In addition, as shown in Figure 3, by introducing the "integrated human measurement and modeling technology" of this system, it is possible to estimate the learner's facial expression, concentration level, interest, level of understanding, ease of understanding, etc., and dynamically change the teaching materials accordingly. This makes it possible to incorporate this not only into general e-learning, but also into university education such as computer programming. The Open University of Japan and Kitasato University are cooperating with this project.

Skills Training Field
In the field of skills training, the aim is to build an individualized model by measuring the biometric information and movements of trainees, and to provide instructors with effective advice. Small and medium-sized enterprises consider introducing automated equipment to production sites to improve productivity, but many sites require manual work due to high running costs and difficulty in maintaining the equipment. However, many small and medium-sized enterprises lack skilled engineers and workers, and skills training that can effectively develop human resources in a short period of time is needed. As shown in Figure 4, if skills training using "integrated human measurement and modeling technology" is established, off-job training using virtual reality and augmented reality can be provided according to the trainee's level of proficiency, concentration, tension, etc., and engineers and workers can be developed in a short period of time. Key technologies include peripheral vision test training that utilizes visual mechanisms, and by combining it with a newly introduced hyperspectral camera and a high-performance wearable electroencephalograph, it is possible to estimate the characteristics of trainees with high accuracy. Cooperating parties include Sagamihara City, which has a track record in industrial promotion, and Oei, a sheet metal manufacturer.

Through the initiatives described above, we aim to establish "next-generation well-being" as a global research brand of Aoyama Gakuin University.

Branding Initiatives
Aoyama Gakuin University, guided by its founding principles, values free and broad academic research aimed at serving humanity, and initially focused its research on the humanities. Since its establishment in 1965, College of Science and Engineering has conducted research in various fields of science and engineering, achieving numerous research accomplishments. However, in order to unify the strengths of a comprehensive university, we recognize the importance of science and engineering and have decided to clearly define a direction to build an academic field that is "centered on people" and directly applicable to our social lives by integrating the technologies cultivated in biomedical measurement and motion measurement with the humanities (psychology).
The uniqueness of this project lies in its approach of viewing people not as a group, but as individuals, from the perspective of "next-generation well-being," thereby adapting various services to individual needs, supported by "integrated human measurement and modeling technology." Within the university, research areas are diverse, but through this project, we aim to create an environment where faculty members not directly involved in the project can also show interest and participate. Based on the founding principles, we will implement this project as a new direction for Aoyama Gakuin University as a comprehensive university, and will continue to disseminate information on the project's efforts and results through various channels such as domestic and international public symposiums, public lectures, mass media, and the web. Through these efforts, we aim to establish "next-generation well-being" as a new research brand for Aoyama Gakuin University.
