The Academic Writing Center (AWC) is a facility located in the library that opened at the Aoyama Campus in 2017 and at Sagamihara Campus in 2018. It has maintained a high utilization rate since its opening, and we are aware of the high demand for it.
With the goal of "supporting the development of independent writers" in anticipation of post-graduation, AWC has specially trained tutors (graduate students) who provide individual consultations on writing academic papers, reports, etc. for each student. In order to improve "writing skills" in response to an internationalized society, we support not only Japanese but also English writing. In 2022, in light of the COVID-19 situation, we conducted consultations both in person and online.
AWC is also actively conducting research into the support and education of academic writing. Starting in 2021, we will expand on our annual report and publish a journal called "Writing Research."
We will continue to work hard every day, striving to become a center based on the servant leadership spirit.

It operates and provides educational and research systems, supports and promotes ICT-based education, and conducts research in the fields of basic information education and information science.
Our specific duties include planning, designing, and implementing various facilities and systems, including the campus network, PC labs, and classroom support systems, based on user requests and trends in information technology. Environmental Safety Center
Environmental Safety Management Center
[Director] Hiromasa Inatsumi (Vice President and Professor, School of Social Informatics)

The Environmental Safety Center aims to protect the living environment of local residents and ensure the safety of students and faculty during experimental research by taking measures against environmental risks arising from educational and research activities that use chemical substances, complying with legal requirements, and carrying out educational and awareness-raising activities for students and faculty based on various laws and regulations related to environmental conservation and safety and health.
In the fields of environmental conservation and health and safety, laws, regulations and standards are frequently updated and becoming stricter, so our Center employs practitioners and qualified personnel who are well versed in these fields to ensure smooth educational and research activities while complying with these regulations.
Our main duties include various measurements based on laws and regulations, as well as establishing rules and management systems for handling highly hazardous substances that have an impact on the environment and human body, creating safety manuals, holding safety seminars for students newly assigned to the laboratory, and providing daily safety guidance to students. We also provide support for educational and research activities, such as coordinating with related departments to deal with accidents that occur during experiments.

Civic Engagement Center
Aoyama Gakuin University Civic Engagement Center
[Director] Yasuhiro Iijima (Professor, School of Social Informatics)

On April 1, 2022, Aoyama Gakuin University Volunteer Center was reborn as Aoyama Gakuin University Civic Engagement Center. The Volunteer Center, which opened in 2016, was established with the aim of cultivating talented individuals with rich humanity and creativity who can demonstrate leadership through volunteer activities. In the future, the center will expand the scope of its activities beyond volunteering to include civic engagement (citizen collaboration) and utilize it in education.
In fiscal 2022, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we implemented the Green Up Project, a city clean-up project, sign language communication courses, nature experience programs (Nanayama Green Space Revitalization Project), Sobudai Housing Complex Revitalization Project, online Japanese salons, Sibuya Ward version of the children's cafeteria "Children's Table," an introduction to international cooperation planners, dementia supporter training courses (Sibuya Ward and Sagamihara City versions), and disaster prevention volunteer courses. In addition, as social businesses, we also carried out activities such as the Kanazawa Outsider Art Project, Shibuya Font (supporting independence by utilizing the design sense of people with disabilities), and Sagamihara City Fujino District Local Gacha.
We have also started The Aoyama Standard Course "Volunteer and Citizen Collaboration Theory." This is an activity that aims to provide an academic opportunity for students to reexamine the activities of the Civic Engagement Center and gain knowledge about citizen collaboration and volunteering. We are also cooperating in implementing "Volunteer Activities as Service Learning" and "Service Learning I and II" as learning opportunities for students to experience citizen collaboration and volunteering.

Aoyama History Research Institute
Aoyama Gakuin Historical Research Institute
[Director] Kazuyuki Kobayashi (Professor, College of Literature)

Aoyama The Institute for the History of the College aims to analyze and examine the historical materials collected and preserved by the college (Aoyama), conduct broad-based research on the historical role the college (Aoyama) played in modern Japanese society, and, by extension, examine the influence of Christian culture on modern Japan, thereby contributing to the advancement of the history of education, the history of ideas, and modern and contemporary history.Additionally, the Institute aims to objectively clarify the founding spirit and historical positioning of Aoyama Gakuin University, and to support and advance the development of education on institutional history at Aoyama Gakuin University and the various schools affiliated with the Academy.
In the 2022 academic year, we worked on compiling Volume I of the General History of the “Aoyama” to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the college’s founding in 2024.This General History Volume I chronicles the history of the three schools that formed the origins of the Aoyama Academy, beginning with the start of missionary work in the early Meiji era; the development of the Aoyama Academy during the Meiji and Taisho periods; and the major trials it faced, such as the Great Kanto Earthquake and the war. Through these pages, you can sense the history of the Aoyama Academy as it developed through times of crisis. We invite you to take a look.
