President and Director of the Integrated Research Organization Hiroshi Sakamoto

At Aoyama Gakuin University, in addition to the "Institute for Integrated Studies," affectionately known as "Soken," which has achieved numerous results over the past 30 years, we have established the "Institute for Integrated Projects," which aims to enable research based on external funding and large-scale projects. In April 2018, we established the "Integrated Research Organization" to bring these two organizations together and lead research across the entire university. We hereby report on the achievements of this organization in fiscal year 2022.
Furthermore, as a new development, in fiscal year 2022, we established the "Institute for Innovative Technology and Social Co-creation" and the "Aoyama Gakuin University Microspacecraft Research Institute" within the Comprehensive Project Research Institute, and are promoting these as President Initiative Projects. We have high hopes that these two projects will be successful as challenges to cutting-edge research at Aoyama Gakuin University.

The role and challenges of the Integrated Research Organization

The Institute for Integrated Research (hereinafter referred to as "the Institute") was established with the aim of conducting integrated projects from a university-wide perspective regarding research at Aoyama Gakuin University, and is now in its sixth year. The Institute consists of the Comprehensive Project Research Institute, which oversees initiatives based on external funding; the General Research Institute, which oversees initiatives based on internal competitive funding; and the Liaison Center, which strengthens the research support system.
Currently, more than 20 externally funded project research institutes operate based on external funding and serve as a platform for many researchers to showcase their work in interdisciplinary fields. The General Research Institute has a proven track record in nurturing researchers and is working to strengthen the university's research system. The Liaison Center, with industry-government-academia collaboration as its pillar, contributes to building the foundation of Aoyama Gakuin University 's research capabilities in order to secure public funding. This demonstrates that the organization has steadily achieved results by comprehensively and broadly addressing the physical distance between Aoyama Campus and Sagamihara Campus from a research perspective.
Unfortunately, perhaps due to the strong Aogaku brand, Aoyama Gakuin University 's ability to showcase its research capabilities is weak. As an institution, we believe it is necessary to focus even more on improving not only our research capabilities themselves, but also our ability to communicate them effectively.
