[Graduate School of Science and Engineering] Mayuko Nakagawa (1st year Master's student, Electrical and Electronic Engineering Course, Department of Science and Engineering) receives the "Young Author Award" at the "29th International Symposium on Artificial Life and Robotics" - Towards the development of a non-contact blood glucose estimation model based on facial images.

From January 24th (Wed) to 26th (Fri), 2024, the "29th International Symposium on Artificial Life and Robotics (AROB 29th 2024)" was held at the Beppu International Convention Center in Oita Prefecture. Mayuko Nakagawa (1st year Master's student in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Graduate School Graduate School of Science and Engineering and Engineering, affiliated with the Laboratory of Biomedical Measurement and Kansei Engineering (Professor Akio Nozawa) at the time of the award) and others received the "Young Author Award" for their research presentation, "An exploratory study of regression methods for blood glucose estimation based on near-infrared facial images with wavelengths ranging from 760nm to 1650nm."

Research overview

Ms. Nakagawa is working on research into blood glucose level estimation based on facial images measured using near-infrared light, which has high penetration depth into the body. To date, she has constructed a blood glucose level estimation model using linear regression, a type of machine learning. However, actual biological responses are nonlinear and exhibit complex fluctuations, so it was necessary to search for a regression method more suitable for blood glucose level estimation. Therefore, in this study, she conducted a comparative analysis of blood glucose level estimation models using multiple linear and nonlinear regressions.

Ms. Nakagawa's research was recognized as the best among the papers written and presented primarily by individuals under the age of 35 at the international symposium, and she was awarded the prize for her promising future.

Comments from the award winners

Mayuko Nakagawa (1st year Master's student, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Graduate School Graduate School of Science and Engineering Engineering; at the time of the award, affiliated with the Laboratory of Biomedical Measurement and Kansei Engineering (Professor Akio Nozawa))

I am deeply honored to receive the Young Author Award.
My research has focused on non-contact blood glucose estimation using facial images, aiming to realize minimally invasive diagnostic techniques. While various mathematical modeling methods exist for blood glucose estimation, actual biological responses are nonlinear and exhibit complex fluctuations. The research for which I received this award tackled this challenge, exploring modeling methods suitable for blood glucose estimation. Moving forward, I will strive to further advance research on blood glucose estimation by building upon this study.

Comments from the supervisor

Professor Akio Nozawa (Department of Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, College of Science and Engineering Engineering)

As Ms. Nakagawa's supervisor, I am truly delighted that she has received this award. Ms. Nakagawa boldly tackled the challenge of researching a completely new vital sensing method that no one had ever attempted before. When she began this research, she must have felt anxious, like groping in the dark, but Ms. Nakagawa demonstrated her innate perseverance in forging her own path. Furthermore, it seems that she has developed mental toughness through her research activities. I look forward to her continuing her efforts and achieving even greater growth in the future.
