A remote performance system using "OSONO," a robot inspired by Joruri puppets, has been unveiled online.
Assistant Professor Sachiko Nakagawa (Aoyama Gakuin University Center for Information and Media Studies) will present the concept of "Community Service Robot" at the MEXT Universal Future Society Promotion Council Robot Showcase, RSi and Shibaura Institute of Technology Group on Friday, July 30, 2021, from four different locations via the Internet. The remote acting system of OSONO, a robot based on Joruri puppets, will be shown online from the Aoyama Gakuin University Sagamihara campus in a demonstration experiment of online tours delivered by multiple robots of different types via the Internet. In addition, the server infrastructure for the community service robot will be hosted by Aoyama Gakuin University the Center for Information and Media Technology.
OSONO, a robot modeled after a joruri puppet, was developed by Professor Emeritus Masahiko Narita (Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology), and Assistant Professor Nakagawa devised a removable kimono for the robot. Currently, under the theme of "Do Service Robots Attract People? This "OSONO" robot is being used to research methods of incorporating the skills of ningyo joruri (puppet gestures, puppet manipulation techniques, and staging procedures) into the physicality of a service robot. In this demonstration experiment, we filmed a performance of "Iroyo Onna Maigori-Sakaya no dan" by the Sagami Puppet Theater Shimonaka-za (Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture), a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and analyzed and extracted gestures and movements from one of the scenes to implement them.
