College of Economics has launched a pilot project for "Advanced English Education Utilizing VR/AI."

In College of Economics General Education and Foreign Language courses, we launched a pilot project in May of this year called "Advanced English Education Utilizing VR/AI" (co-leaders: Professor Shinji Yamamoto, Associate Professor Yoshiho Satake, and Professor Emeritus Takayuki Kobari) to propose a new approach to English education using EdTech (Education & Technology).

This study quantitatively and qualitatively examines how the practical English skills and motivation to learn improve in approximately 100 students participating in a VR project (60 in the experimental group; 40 in the control group) through immersive VR English learning utilizing the latest VR goggles and AI speakers. From June for eight months, students in the experimental group will take a predetermined number of task-learning VR lessons at home or at university, conducted by American Christian volunteer operators of the same age, and will regularly use AI speakers at home for English listening and conversation practice.

All participating students will take pre- and post-tests of English Speaking (OPIc), and will also take monthly TOEIC mini- and full tests (ATR CALL BRIX). In addition, a "Questionnaire on English Proficiency and Intercultural Sensitivity" will be administered to students in the experimental group to investigate and analyze improvements in their English proficiency and changes in their desire to study abroad, and a "VR and AI Learning Questionnaire" will record and analyze detailed learning history and responses.

Aoyama Gakuin University 's foreign language education has been one of the earliest among Japanese universities to introduce CALL classrooms and active learning methods utilizing ICT. This "Advanced English Education Utilizing VR/AI" project is highly compatible with the objectives of "Scheem-D," an industry-academia-government collaboration project that began in June 2020 to promote the digital transformation of university education, and is seen as part of an effort to realize "the creation of university education in the With- and After-COVID-19 era."

Scheem-D is an initiative that focuses on education at universities (including junior colleges and technical colleges), particularly in the classroom, and involves university faculty and digital engineers (companies) collaborating to implement, experiment with, and disseminate ideas for distinctive and excellent educational approaches that effectively utilize digital technology in educational settings. It aims to achieve learner-centered university education by maximizing the value of classes through a skillful combination of cyber and physical elements, thereby realizing the "digitalization of university education."
