Aoyama Gakuin University In April 2021, the university-affiliated “Schoenmaker Memorial Center for Gender Studies” was established.

The “Schoenmaker Memorial” is named after Dora E. Schoenmaker, a missionary who, during the Meiji period, founded a girls’ elementary school—one of the precursors to Aoyama Academy.
Ensuring that all people enjoy equal human rights regardless of gender, and building a society where diverse forms of sexual orientation and gender identity are respected so that everyone can live authentically, is one of the most pressing issues today, both globally and in Japan.As an institution of higher education and research, the university bears a social mission to address these challenges. Furthermore, within the broader educational and research community of Aoyama, the issues of gender equality and respect for sexual diversity must always be kept in mind and actively promoted.

[Purpose of Establishment]
While cherishing the educational philosophy of Aoyama College, which dates back to the Skoonmaker era, and carrying forward the tradition of women’s education at Aoyama College into a new era,
“to contribute to gender equality and respect for sexual diversity at Aoyama and in society through the conduct of gender studies and the advancement of gender education at Aoyama Gakuin University, based on the Christian spirit” (from Article 2 of the “Regulations of the Skoonmaker Memorial Center for Gender Studies Affiliated with Aoyama Gakuin University”).

[Scope of Activities]
To achieve its founding purpose, the Center will primarily carry out three types of activities: research (planning and managing research activities on gender equality and sexual diversity, and publishing research findings); education (planning and managing educational activities on gender equality and sexual diversity); and social contribution (planning and managing social contribution activities related to gender equality and sexual diversity).The Center will be managed by a Steering Committee, which includes the Director and Deputy Director; the Steering Committee is expected to be composed of approximately equal numbers of men and women.Furthermore, the details of the initiatives in these three areas will be discussed and implemented primarily by working committees for each field; each working committee is expected to include a broad range of faculty members with diverse areas of expertise, drawn from as many academic departments as possible, without gender bias.

[Inaugural Symposium]
To commemorate the establishment of the Center, we will hold an online symposium titled “The ‘Past’ and ‘Future’ of University Gender Research Institutions” on Sunday, May 9, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
