Address President INAZUMI Hiroshige

Congratulations on your admission. Aoyama Gakuin University warmly welcomes you all.

With a fresh perspective, let’s take a look at the “Aoyama Gakuin University ’s Philosophy.” “Aoyama Gakuin University is an educational and research community that serves God and humanity and contributes to society as ‘the salt of the earth and the light of the world,’ grounded in the Aoyama Educational Policy.”The phrase “Salt of the Earth, Light of the World” is taken from the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament and serves as the college’s motto. “Aoyama Gakuin University” aims to “cultivate individuals who possess the wisdom and strength to identify and solve problems on their own, guided by a correct understanding based on a global perspective.”Here, it is stated that education at the Aoyama Gakuin University embraces a global perspective and emphasizes a proactive attitude toward learning rather than a passive one. The text continues by explaining that this is achieved “through free and broad academic research aimed at serving humanity.”

Therefore, let's reconsider academic research, and the very act of learning itself. Up until now, you have all likely studied in a world where there are "correct answers" to given questions. However, at university, you are required not to answer given questions, but to formulate the questions yourself. You've probably heard this before. So, let's also consider the origins of the university as a place of learning. National universities, which you have likely considered as your desired schools, are universities created by the government. They have a mission to cultivate human resources who will support society and the nation. That's why a large amount of taxpayer money is invested in them.

On the other hand, private universities are institutions created by "people" based on their "founding principles." Aoyama Gakuin University University was established in 1949 as a new university, with Aoyama as its foundation, which traces its origins to three schools founded by three missionaries: Dora E. Schoonmaker, Julius Soper, and Robert S. MacRae. Of course, they contribute to the country and society, and are funded by taxes, but as the fundamental rules of private universities are called "articles of incorporation," they are created through the individual service based on the aspiration to create such a school. It can also be said that it has a history as a place of learning that started from the questions of "how should people live" and "what should people learn." In short, private universities are communities that are born and nurtured through the human relationships of the people who created them, the people who supported them, the people who operated them, the people who researched them, the people who taught them, and the people who studied them.

You've probably looked at various universities without giving it much thought, simply considering them as universities you want to attend or can attend. However, each university has its own unique history and origins. The idea of studying for the sake of your country and society is certainly important. But private universities ask you this question first: "How do you want to live your life?"

People learn in order to live fulfilling lives. They learn to deepen and broaden their own lives. However, in order to live a fulfilling life oneself, the many people around oneself must also be fulfilled. As a result, this brings value to society. This is an important concept for everyone involved with private universities. How can one live a fulfilling life, and what kind of value do we aim to bring? The founding spirit of each private university lies in these questions. At Aoyama Gakuin University, this is embodied in the image of a servant leader. A person who possesses both servant and leader, two seemingly opposite elements, is the ideal that Aoyama strives for.

This is something you will put into practice in your studies in your chosen field at university, in your activities and encounters in clubs and circles, and in your interactions with society beyond the university. It's okay if you don't have the answers right away. In fact, confronting questions that don't have easy answers is what learning at university is all about. Please, use your own life as a starting point and engage in many things. Don't set goals given to you by someone else, but ask yourself questions like, "Can I be satisfied with this?" and "How do I want to be?" I believe that those who ask themselves these questions will ultimately support society and create new value.

I sincerely hope that the next four years for all of you will not simply be a time to increase your knowledge, but a time to reflect on "who you are."

Congratulations again on your enrollment.
