Graduation requirements

We will introduce the graduation requirements and course registration for the Department of Physics and Mathematics.

degree

Students who study in the Department of Physics and Mathematics for four or more years (up to eight years) and earn the 138 or more credits required for graduation will be awarded a Bachelor of Science degree.

Maximum credit limit

The maximum number of credits that can be registered is the maximum number of credits that can be registered each year.
The maximum number of credits that can be taken in the Faculty of College of Science and Engineering is as follows. Students may not take more than the number of credits shown in this table in each year. Students must take at least one subject in each year.

Those with few acquired credits

Students whose number of credits earned in the first or second year after enrollment and GPA meet the following criteria will be asked to confirm their intention to study and will be given a warning, caution, or recommendation to withdraw from the university. Please be careful not to fall under any of these conditions, as you may be expelled as a student with no prospect of completing your studies.

- The number of earned credits is 16 or less, or the GPA is below the threshold (less than 0.5) that the faculty deems necessary to give a warning.
- The number of earned credits is between 17 and 31, or the GPA is below the threshold level that the faculty deems necessary (0.5 or more and less than 0.7).

- The number of earned credits is less than 32 and the GPA is less than the standard value determined by the faculty (less than 0.7).

Advancement Requirements

In order to advance from the third year to the fourth year, students must have fulfilled the requirements for "Graduation Research" by the end of their third year.
However, only students who study abroad at a partner or accredited institution during the period equivalent to the second semester of their third year to the first semester of their fourth year at Aoyama Gakuin University may take "Physics Experiment A" or "Mathematics Experiment A" (2 credits, 6 hours per week in the first semester) in the first semester of their third year. Furthermore, provided that they fulfill the requirements for their graduation research by the start of the second semester of their fourth year, they may advance to the fourth year and take "Graduation Research A" (8 credits, 24 hours per week in the second semester), "Physics Seminar A," or "Mathematics Seminar A" (4 credits, 8 hours per week in the second semester). Please notify your department before studying abroad and follow their instructions.

Graduation research requirements

The requirements for graduation research are as follows:

(1) Have been enrolled for three years or more.

(2) Have completed all required credits for graduation from the compulsory subjects up to the third year, excluding the subjects listed below.

Specialized subjects: "Computer Applications Exercises" and "Statistical Mechanics I"
Mathematical Sciences Course
The Aoyama Standard Courses: "Second Foreign Language Courses"
Specialized subject "Computer Applications Exercise"

(3) Have completed 38 or more credits from the elective compulsory courses in specialized subjects (courses marked with ◇◆△ for the Physical Sciences course and ▲▽ for the Mathematical Sciences course).

(4) Have completed 116 or more credits among the credits required for graduation.

About grading

Grading

Academic performance is evaluated through examinations conducted for each course (written exams, reports, essays, oral exams, practical tests, and other methods specified by the instructor).

Grades at Aoyama Gakuin University are evaluated on a 100-point scale. A score of 60 or higher is considered passing, and the required credits will be awarded.

The academic transcript will show passing grades (AA, A, B, C). The grade report will also show failing grades (XX, X). However, for "Information Skills I" and designated overseas training, if the required credits are awarded, the academic transcript will show "RR" and the grade report will show "Pass".

GPA

GPA (Grade Point Average) refers to the average grade point average per credit for courses a student has registered for. This is a globally standardized method of grading widely used in Europe and the United States, and at Aoyama Gakuin University, it is used when selecting candidates for scholarships and academic achievement awards, selecting the valedictorian at the degree conferment ceremony, and for admission to Aoyama Gakuin University graduate school.
Courses you take will be assigned grades such as A, B, C, XX, etc. These grades are quantified, and the average for each credit is calculated as your GPA.
At Aoyama Gakuin University, the scoring system for each evaluation is as follows:

The above grades are applied to the following formula to calculate your GPA.

*For the Faculty of Science and Engineering and School of Social Informatics, teacher training course subjects are not included in the GPA calculation.
*"Information Skills I" is not included in GPA calculation.

Grade notification

Students' grades will be announced in early March and mid-September via the "Grade Report" in the Student Portal Menu. If you wish to view the report from an off-campus PC, you must first register a SecureMatrix password on campus. (For details, please refer to the "Procedure for viewing grade reports from off-campus" in the Student Portal Menu.) Please print out your grade report and check the courses you have completed and their grades.

Grade survey

If you have any doubts about your grade evaluation, you can request a "grade investigation." This does not mean you should easily ask the instructor to reconsider or change your grade. Please only request this if you have clear grounds for doubting your grade.
Please bring your grade report to the Academic Affairs Office at your campus during the investigation period designated by the university. The investigation period will be announced on the "Student Portal".
