Educational and research objectives and three policies (Department of Physical Sciences)
POLICY Educational and research objectives, three policies
Educational and research objectives
This program cultivates individuals who have the ability to apply the thinking and methods of physics to solve a wide variety of problems encountered in the real world, including not only natural sciences in general, but also complex social phenomena. The program cultivates individuals who can observe objects and grasp problems based on basic knowledge, and who can exercise insight and judgment based on scientific analysis and interpretation, who can objectively and logically reconstruct objects, extract essential points, model them, and thereby propose and put into practice specific approaches to solving a wide range of problems, and who have the ability to disseminate information about the problems in a subject and their proposed solutions to others.
Diploma Policy (Policy for Graduation Certification and Degree Awarding)
■ Knowledge and skills
As part of their specialized skills, students will acquire the ability to analyze various subjects, understand and solve problems based on fundamental and applied physics, and as part of their basic knowledge, they will have acquired English, mathematics and information technology. In other words, they will have acquired the foundations of approaches to solving a variety of problems.
■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
They have acquired the ability to communicate to others the problems in a subject and their solutions by observing and grasping the problems based on basic knowledge, using the insight and judgment based on analytical training, and reconstructing these objectively and logically, or by extracting and modeling the essential points.
■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
They have an inquisitive mind that seeks to understand unknown problems encountered in the real world.
They have an interest in difficult problems, are able to face them sincerely, and have the desire to become engineers and researchers who can use their creativity to solve them.
Curriculum Policy (Policy for creating and implementing educational courses)
We will develop an educational program that fosters creative engineers and researchers who are responsible for people, society, and the natural environment, through physical science education that goes beyond basic principles and focuses on applications in various fields. Students will carefully consider their own paths and create their own study plans based on their own will and responsibility.
Students will study physics across various levels and scales, from fundamental physics such as mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and relativity, to specialized fields such as solid-state physics, astrophysics, and biophysics, and even cutting-edge applied fields such as superconductivity, nanotechnology, and quantum electronics.
The annual progress is shown below.
In the first year, emphasis is placed on acquiring fundamental skills such as English as a communication tool, computer literacy, mathematics as a foundation for systems analysis and physical science, and information technology as a foundation for system development. Furthermore, lectures and exercises in mechanics, calculus, and linear algebra, which are fundamental to physics, are included as compulsory subjects.
In the second year, the most important subjects in physics, such as electromagnetism and quantum mechanics, are included as compulsory subjects. These subjects are taught in combination with practical exercises. This allows students to acquire fundamental academic skills intensively. In addition, a "Basic Experiment in Physical Measurement" course is conducted.
In the third year, slightly more specialized lecture courses are offered to provide students with a foundation of more practical knowledge, while other specialized courses are arranged to achieve Aoyama Gakuin University 's educational goal of "application to diverse fields." At the same time, "Specialized Physics Experiments" is made a compulsory subject.
In their fourth year, students conduct their graduation research in their respective laboratories as the culmination of these curriculum courses.
In graduation research, students generally tackle novel problems for which the results are unknown. This involves building actual experimental equipment, designing and executing experiments based on new ideas, analyzing new data, and performing numerical simulations from new perspectives.
Admission Policy
■ Knowledge and skills
Students will have an understanding of the content of foreign languages, mathematics, science, etc. necessary for studying a specialized field, and will have knowledge equivalent to that of a high school graduate, with a particular focus on basic academic ability in mathematics and physics.
■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
This is a level equivalent to graduating from high school, and students will be able to consider things from multiple perspectives and logically, and express and communicate their own thoughts in an easily understandable manner.
■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
After understanding the characteristics of the department, students are also interested in mathematics and natural science-related fields and have the desire and interest to contribute to society by utilizing their specialized knowledge and skills.
