Educational and Research Objectives and Three Policies (Department of Mechanical Engineering)
POLICY Educational and research objectives, three policies
Educational and research objectives
Department of Mechanical Engineering aims to cultivate mechanical engineers and researchers who can create new things that are responsible for people, society, and nature, in line with the founding principles of Aoyama Gakuin University, in the current era of advanced information technology, globalization, global finiteness, and aging. In other words, it aims to cultivate engineers and researchers who contribute to the welfare of society and the preservation of the environment through mechanical technology, and engineers and researchers who have the foundation for life cycle engineering that takes into account from development to disposal. To provide these engineers and researchers with the necessary skills, (1) analytical skills based on mechanics and the integration skills necessary for the development, maintenance, and disposal of mechanical systems as specialized abilities, (2) basic skills such as English, mathematics, and information technology, and (3) a rich general education that enhances judgment.
Diploma Policy (Policy for Graduation Certification and Degree Awarding)
■ Knowledge and skills
As professional skills, students will have acquired the ability to analyze phenomena based on mechanics (knowledge of materials, heat, fluids, and machine movements), the integrated ability to design and manufacture mechanical structures, and basic knowledge of English, mathematics, and information technology. In other words, students will have acquired the foundations of an accountable engineer who can explain things responsibly.
■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
They have acquired the ability to detect risks based on basic knowledge, insight and judgment based on trained observation skills, and the ability to model and communicate these to others.
■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
They have acquired an inquisitive mind that uses experimental and simulation techniques to understand phenomena in the real world.
They have an interest in difficult problems, and a desire to become accountable engineers who can explain problems responsibly and use their creativity to solve them.
Curriculum Policy (Policy for creating and implementing educational courses)
We will develop an educational program that fosters creative engineers and researchers who can take responsibility for people, society, and nature through manufacturing education.
In the first year, emphasis is placed on acquiring fundamental skills such as English as a communication tool, computer literacy, mathematics as a foundation for system analysis and model building, and information technology as a foundation for system development.
In the second year, the four most important branches of mechanics in mechanical engineering—strength of materials, machine dynamics, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics—are included as compulsory subjects. By combining these subjects with practical exercises, students will acquire fundamental academic skills intensively.
In the third year, mechanical engineering experiments and mechanical design and drafting are included to provide students with a more practical foundation of knowledge, while other specialized subjects are arranged to achieve Aoyama Gakuin University 's educational goal of "cultivating accountable engineers who can create things."
In their fourth year, students conduct their graduation research in their respective laboratories as the culmination of these curriculum courses.
Mechanical engineering is broadly divided into the following three fields. Students are expected to carefully consider their own career path and create their own study plan based on their own will and responsibility.
Field 1: Focusing on materials, students will learn about the properties and behavior of materials, such as deformation, strength, and fracture.
Field 2: Focusing on heat and fluids, students will learn about the mechanics of heat and flow, the utilization of thermal energy, heat transfer, and transport systems.
Field 3: Focusing on dynamics, measurement, control, and production, students will learn the fundamentals of systems related to machine movement and its measurement and control, as well as design methods and production systems.
In parallel with the above, practical subjects such as lab work, mechanical engineering exercises, mechanical engineering experiments, and mechanical design and drafting are offered. These subjects cultivate the ability to integrate and solve problems through practical experience.
Our graduation research emphasizes experimental studies. Even in analytical research, we provide thorough guidance on its engineering significance, comparison with experimental results, and application to real-world situations, ensuring it goes beyond mere numerical simulations. Our goal is to cultivate accountable engineers who can create tangible products.
Admission Policy
■ Knowledge and skills
Students will be able to understand the content of foreign languages, mathematics, science, etc. necessary for studying a specialized field, have knowledge equivalent to that of a high school graduate, and understand the basics of mechanics.
■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
This is a level equivalent to graduating from high school, and students will be able to consider things from multiple perspectives and logically, and express and communicate their own thoughts in an easily understandable manner.
■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
Students who understand the characteristics of the department, have an interest in manufacturing, and are motivated and interested in using their specialized knowledge and skills to contribute to society.
