Educational and research objectives and three policies
We would like to introduce the educational and research objectives, educational policy, and three policies of Aoyama Gakuin University School of Graduate School of Education, Psychology and Human Studies Department of Psychology.
Educational and research objectives
In the Master's Program, Department of Psychology provides research guidance with the aim of cultivating basic academic knowledge and research capabilities as psychology professionals, supporting the acquisition of specialized and practical knowledge and skills accompanied by a mature sense of ethics, and making diverse contributions to society. In the Doctoral Program, the goal is to develop talented individuals who can conduct more advanced and specialized academic research in psychology, present the results of their research both domestically and internationally, complete their dissertations, and become excellent researchers with practical knowledge who can play an active role in universities and research institutes both in Japan and overseas.

They have the ability to educate themselves, to think independently, express themselves, and act independently while tackling the various problems facing modern people from multiple angles and actively responding to social demands.

- Have a desire to contribute to society through psychological research and practice.
- Possess the necessary ethical sense when conducting research and practice. -
Curriculum Policy (Policy for creating and implementing educational courses)
Department of Psychology (Master's Program) has organized the following curriculum in order to achieve the department's goal of cultivating talented people. (Note that from the time of enrollment, Department of Psychology is divided into a Psychology Course and a Clinical Psychology Course depending on the student's field of specialization and envisioned future.)
Psychology Courses:
The courses are designed to cultivate the academic knowledge, research abilities, skills, and attitudes required of psychology researchers. In basic courses, students will comprehensively examine psychological research methods and acquire the foundations of statistical methods that are fundamental for handling data. In specialized courses, students will acquire a wide range of specialized knowledge and skills in other areas of psychology, focusing on their own field of expertise. In addition to these coursework, students will write a master's thesis under the research guidance of their supervisor throughout their time at the university.
Clinical Psychology Courses:
The course aims to cultivate the academic knowledge, research ability, skills, and attitudes of a clinical psychologist, and is designed around the subjects required to qualify to take the clinical psychologist certification exam. In the foundational subjects, students will acquire basic knowledge of clinical psychology as well as the basic attitudes and skills of a clinician. In the specialized subjects, students will acquire specialized knowledge by taking lecture and seminar subjects mainly in clinical psychology and surrounding areas, and will also focus on acquiring the necessary skills through many subjects that involve practical training. In addition, subjects on psychological measurement and experimental psychology are offered, and students will acquire the skills to conduct clinical research. Elective subjects include lectures on psychology in areas other than clinical practice, allowing students to broaden their horizons if necessary. -

- Possess a mature ethical sense necessary for conducting research and practice.

Curriculum Policy (Policy for creating and implementing educational courses)
In order to achieve the department's goal of cultivating human resources, Department of Psychology (Doctoral Program) will organize a detailed educational curriculum that is more tailored to the individual, building on the foundations of education and research in the first program.
One of the main goals of the doctoral program is to train researchers, so research to obtain a degree is the main focus of student activities. Throughout the doctoral program, students receive regular guidance from their supervisor, receive advice from other faculty and researchers as needed, and take classes in other programs (such as the master's program), all while further enhancing their knowledge and skills in their specialized field, cultivating their ability to think, make decisions, and express themselves, and deepening their attitude as researchers. In addition, twice each year, students are required to present the research on their doctoral degree application thesis at a "research interim report session" attended by all faculty and students in the major department. -
