We will introduce the graduation requirements and course enrollment for Department of Psychology.

Master's Program in Psychology

  • Completion Requirements

    Students must be enrolled for at least two years, earning a total of 40 credits including 8 credits in foundation subjects, 8 credits in specialized subjects (lectures and seminars), and 8 credits in research guidance I-IV. They must also submit a master's degree application thesis or the results of research on a specific topic, and pass the review and final examination. However, only students who have passed the adult entrance examination may submit the results of research on a specific topic. Furthermore, of the 40 credits, up to 10 credits of courses from other departments and graduate schools in the Graduate Graduate School of Education, Psychology and Human Studies with the permission of the research supervisor and the instructor in charge of the course may be counted toward the graduation requirements. Courses offered in the Clinical Psychology course may not be taken. As for the period of enrollment, those who have achieved outstanding research results will be required to be enrolled for at least one year.

Master's Program in Clinical Psychology

  • Completion Requirements

    Students must be enrolled for at least two years, acquire a total of at least 40 credits including 16 credits from 10 required subjects and at least 2 credits from each of the elective subjects A through E, and 8 credits from the prescribed research guidance I through IV. They must then submit a master's degree application thesis or research results on a specific topic and pass the examination and final examination. However, only students who entered through the working adult entrance examination may submit research results on a specific topic. Please note that those who complete the program without passing a master's thesis will not be eligible to take the clinical psychologist examination. Furthermore, acquiring credits in subjects from other majors will not fulfill the graduation requirements. In addition, students cannot take courses offered in the psychology course. Regarding the period of enrollment, those who have achieved outstanding research results may be required to be enrolled for at least one year.
    Furthermore, those seeking to become eligible to take the Certified Clinical Psychologist examination must complete the subjects specified by ministerial ordinances of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Aoyama Gakuin University, as well as the Psychological Practice Seminar I and II courses offered by this university.

  • About the "Certified Psychologist Subjects" stipulated by ministerial ordinance of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology

    In principle, Aoyama Gakuin University will interpret the subjects for clinical psychologists as subjects specified in the above ministerial ordinance.

    *Please note that if you intend to use this as a subject for certified psychologists, it will not be recognized as a Group E subject for clinical psychologists.

  • Obtaining a clinical psychologist license

    A certified clinical psychologist is a qualification certified by the Japanese Association of Certified Clinical Psychologists. In principle, one must have completed a master's program at a graduate school and have at least one year (in the case of Type 2 designated graduate schools, etc.) or at least two years (in the case of former Type 2 designated graduate schools, etc.) of clinical psychology experience to be eligible to take the examination.
    Aoyama Gakuin University 's Graduate School Department of Psychology Clinical Psychology Course, has a proper educational curriculum that includes clinical psychology internships and a paid graduate school-affiliated psychological counseling service, and is accredited as a Type 1 designated graduate school by the Japan Association of Certified Clinical Psychologists. Therefore, upon completion of the Master's program, you will be eligible to take the doctoral examination.

Doctoral Program

Students must designate a research supervisor, choose a research topic under his/her supervision, complete 12 credits in the prescribed research guidance courses V to X, submit a doctoral thesis and pass its review and the final examination, and pass certification in one foreign language.
In addition, students must take the courses designated by their research supervisor and submit a research progress report at the end of each academic year.
In addition to the above, students enrolled in or after the 2018 academic year must complete a total of 16 credits in Special Seminar on Psychology Research Methods I and II (2 credits each).

The standard period for completing a doctoral program is three years (Article 10 of the School Regulations), however, if the above conditions are met, it is possible to complete the program within three years.
